Thoroughbreds Go Two of Two

The division two Melton Thoroughbreds continued their winning form with two big wins on the weekend, taking the winning streak to six games and solidifying second spot on the ladder.

In the first game, the Thoroughbreds took the short trip to local rival, the 5th placed Keilor Thunder. With finals positions on the line this was a huge game for both teams. Shooting at an insane 65% in the first half, the Thoroughbreds understood the importance of the match and laid the first punch, leaving the Thunder team stunned. Impressive shooting by Jeff Crowe (23 points) and Jordan Kirk (18 points) lead the way as the lead was never relinquished in the second half. With the Thoroughbred big’s dominating the rebounding 44 – 35, ensured even when there was a miss, there was always a second opportunity to score. With everyone contributing on the scoreboard, the Thoroughbred’s took out an impressive 84 – 74 win over the Keilor Thunder.

Following the big game in Keilor, the Thoroughbreds returned home on Sunday to take on the dangerous defensively minded Maccabi Warriors. Being the second game of the weekend it was important that all players contributed. A sizziling 20 – 8 opening quarter was the catalyst needed to give the Thoroughbreds the lead for good. Strong displays from Matt Strutynski (10 points and 15 rebounds) and Peter Leppik (7 points and 11 rebounds) ensured that the Thoroughbreds dominated the inside game. The Thoroughbred bench did exactly what was needed to keep the scoreboard ticking, ensuring the Thoroughbreds’ their second win of the weekend, defeating the Warriors 68 – 62.

The two wins helps the Thoroughbreds hold onto second place in Big V Division two. They hope to continue this impressive streak as they travel to Mornington on Saturday night to take on the Mornington Breakers.
