The ‘Melton Garden Supplies’ Junior Thoroughbreds are the representative squads of the Melton Basketball Association.
Each October, try-outs are held for Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 Boys and Girls teams.
After selection, these teams compete in the Victorian Junior Basketball League which conducts games on Friday nights across Metropolitan Melbourne and Country Victoria. With over 1,000 teams entered in 2012, it is the largest basketball league in the Southern Hemisphere.
Practise games are held in November and teams then progress into the ‘Grading Phase’ in December. After a thorough series of games, teams are then placed in a division based on results. These range from Victorian Championship Division (top 20 teams in Victoria) to ‘VJBL League’ 1-4 (Next best 40 teams) and finally ‘Regional’ divisions 1-3 which are grouped geographically with the remaining teams. The regular season begins in March and continues until finals in September.
Tryouts for the following season the start agin in mid-October.
The Junior Thoroughbreds program is the next step in the Basketball Pathway above domestic basketball. Those selected in the program are exposed to a higher level of basketball competitions and benefit from higher level coaching. This program does come with a higher time and financial committment. Teams train for 1.5-2.5 hours per week and Friday Night games are played both home (Melton Rec Centre) and away each week. However, those players who are selected and make a commitment to the program are given the appropriate coaching and support to excel and reach their potential in basketball.
Try-out dates will be confirmed closer to October. All interested junior players aged (9+) are welcome and encouraged to attend.
